
{"id":3808,"date":"2016-03-21T04:38:54","date_gmt":"2016-03-20T17:38:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emotemuse.com\/g\/?p=3808"},"modified":"2016-03-21T04:38:54","modified_gmt":"2016-03-20T17:38:54","slug":"a-new-overture-fast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wedgebillmusic.com\/?p=3808","title":{"rendered":"A new overture &#8211; fast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Beethoven&#8217;s revised version of <em>Fidelio<\/em> was due to be premiered on the 23rd May 1814.\u00a0Beethoven had planned to write a new overture for the performance.\u00a0He was still yet to complete it before the final rehearsal on the 22nd May.\u00a0The night before, he was dining out with his physician (Dr. Bertolini).\u00a0After dinner, he took a menu, drew lines on its blank side, and began to write.\u00a0&#8220;Come, let&#8221;s go&#8221;, said Bertolini.\u00a0&#8220;No,&#8221; Beethoven replied, &#8220;wait a moment.\u00a0I have an idea for my overture.&#8221;\u00a0Bertolini left, and Beethoven remained to finish his sketch. <a href=\"#1\">(1)<\/a>\u00a0Treitschke, who revised the libretto for the opera, recounted the final rehearsal and first performance:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The orchestra was called to rehearsal on the morning of the performance.\u00a0B. [Beethoven] did not come.\u00a0After waiting a long time we drove to his lodgings to bring him, but &#8211; he lay in bed, sleeping soundly, beside him stood a goblet with wine and a biscuit in it, the sheets of the overture were scattered on the bed and floor.\u00a0A burnt-out candle showed that he had worked far into the night.\u00a0The impossibility of completing the overture was plain; for this occasion his overture to <em>Prometheus<\/em> <a href=\"#2\">(2)<\/a> was taken and the announcement that because of obstacles which had presented themselves the new overture would have to be dispensed with today, enabled the numerous audience to guess the sufficient reason. <a href=\"#3\">(3)<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Beethoven later remember the incident and remarked\u00a0&#8220;the people applauded and I was ashamed.\u00a0It did not belong to the rest.&#8221; <a href=\"#4\">(4)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Beethoven &#8220;conducted&#8221; the first performance, but Michael Umlauf\u00a0(who also conducted Beethoven&#8221;s Ninth Symphony) actually gave the real cues behind his back.<\/p>\n<p>The new overture to <em>Fidelio<\/em> was performed at the performance on May 26 and &#8220;was received with tempestuous applause.&#8221; <a href=\"#5\">(5)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"1\"><\/a>(1) Marek, George (1969) <em>Beethoven: Biography of a Genius<\/em>.\u00a0London: William Kimber, p.473.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2\"><\/a>(2) According to Marek (op. cit.)
