
{"id":4597,"date":"2016-04-12T05:21:00","date_gmt":"2016-04-11T19:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emotemuse.com\/g\/?p=4597"},"modified":"2016-04-12T05:28:16","modified_gmt":"2016-04-11T19:28:16","slug":"stokowskis-rehearsal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wedgebillmusic.com\/?p=4597","title":{"rendered":"Stokowski&#8217;s rehearsal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Raoul Berger <a href=\"https:\/\/wedgebillmusic.com\/?p=4599\" target=\"_blank\">(who eventually had a fall out with the conductor Stokowski<\/a> and left The Philahrmonic Orchestra) described Stokowski&#8217;s rehearsal process:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>In rehearsal Stoki was given to the methods of a marine drill-sergeant, brutal and insulting.\u00a0 In those days he was accustomed to make sweeping changes every season, so that those who were dependent on their jobs lived in fear and trembling.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>He had his good qualities &#8211; a rich, voluptuous sound, great precision and vitality.\u00a0 In music that called for fire and sensuality he was at his best.\u00a0 His &#8216;Danse Infernale&#8217; from Stravinsky&#8217;s <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Firebird<\/span> was truly demonic, etched in biting rhythms.\u00a0 He rose to sensual ecstasy inthe <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Afternoon of a Faun<\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Unlike Walter and Mengelberg, Stoki indulged in no long-winded &#8216;explanations&#8217; of the music in literary images.\u00a0 All was addressed in terms of how to do it, as it should be.\u00a0 Consequently rehearsals were short, not a minute wasted, often only half the length of the average rehearsal.\u00a0 He knew where the weak spots were and rehearsed them. &#8230; Not a little of the &#8216;mesmerism&#8217; of which some of his players speak grew out of the fact that the men were not wearied , boring rehearsals, that we had fewer concerts and rehearsals than most major orchestras, that often they had not a chance to play a work through, and therefore fell on it with ardor at the concert.
