
{"id":5541,"date":"2018-12-28T14:34:04","date_gmt":"2018-12-28T03:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/emotemuse.com\/g\/?p=5541"},"modified":"2018-12-28T14:34:04","modified_gmt":"2018-12-28T03:34:04","slug":"dividing-the-concert-takings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wedgebillmusic.com\/?p=5541","title":{"rendered":"Dividing the concert takings"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In 1866 Brahms and the violinist Joachim gave a concert tour through Switzerland.\u00a0 One of their concerts was in Aarau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>After the program, Brahms and Joachim went to a tavern, where they opened several bottles of the best vintage Swiss wine, including the popular <em><g class=\"gr_ gr_59 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"59\" data-gr-id=\"59\">vin<\/g> mousseux<\/em> of Lausanne.\u00a0 Brahms felt decidedly genial.<br> <br> &#8220;How did we do this evening, my friend?&#8221; he asked the concert manager.<br> <br> &#8220;Very well, very well!&#8221; the small, meek-looking manager replied, rubbing his hands together.\u00a0 &#8220;I have all the receipts in here,&#8221; he whispered, pointing to a small sack which he held close to his side.<br> <br> &#8220;Give it to us!&#8217; exclaimed Joachim, seizing the bag.\u00a0 &#8220;Here, Hannes, we&#8217;ll divvy up the swag.&#8221;<br> <br> &#8220;Gentlemen &#8211; but, please, I haven&#8217;t yet made up my accounts,&#8221; the little man cried anxiously.<br> <br> &#8220;No matter &#8211; we&#8217;ll divide it anyhow.\u00a0 Here, Hannes &#8211; a five-franc piece for you.&#8221; He tossed a silver coin to Brahms.<\/p><p><br>By this time a crowd had gathered round to watch the fun.\u00a0 Piece by piece the &#8220;swag&#8221; was doled out &#8211; one to Yussuf, one to Johannes.\u00a0 Finally, nothing was left but a twenty-franc note.\u00a0 &#8220;I&#8217;ll take that,&#8221; said Joachim, non-nonchalantly putting the bill in his pocket.  <\/p><p>&#8220;Hold on &#8211; that&#8217;s mine!&#8221; Brahms shouted in an outraged voice.  <\/p><p>&#8220;And how do you figure that out?&#8221;  &#8220;<\/p><p>Why, I played the best part of the program &#8211; all my own solos, and your accompaniment besides.&#8221;  <\/p><p>&#8220;Listen -&#8221;  Joachim addressed the company. &#8220;That fellow is a complete egotist.&#8221;  He fixed Johannes with an accusing eye.\u00a0 &#8220;Didn&#8217;t you insist that your name should be printed first on all the programs?&#8221;<\/p><p>&#8220;Correct alphabetical order,&#8221; grumbled Johannes.\u00a8<\/p><p>&#8220;Alphabetical order?  <em>Musical<\/em> sequence is more important than anything else.\u00a0 It should be:\u00a8<\/p><p><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wedgebillmusic.com\/images\/anecodetes\/dividing%20the%20concert%20takings.jpg\" alt=\"Joachim Brahms\" width=\"202\" height=\"71\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;Why,&#8221; he went on, &#8220;I was playing in concerts &#8211; a big artist &#8211; when you were still in the nursery.&#8221;  (Nursery! thought Brahms, remembering the Hamburg dance-Halls [where he played as a boy].) &#8220;Yes,&#8221; Joachim insisted, &#8220;this money rightfully belongs to me.&#8221;<\/p><p> &#8220;On guard!&#8221; shouted Johannes in mock fury, seizing a tall <g class=\"gr_ gr_36 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"36\" data-gr-id=\"36\">alpenstock  that<\/g> stood near, and thrusting another into Yussef&#8217;s hands.\u00a0 &#8220;We&#8217;ll  fight for it.&#8221;  <\/p><p>&#8220;Gentlemen! Gentlemen!&#8221; begged the anguished <g class=\"gr_ gr_42 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Punctuation multiReplace\" id=\"42\" data-gr-id=\"42\">manager;<\/g>  but no one paid any attention to him.\u00a0 Then suddenly he left the room.\u00a0  Just as the two friends were about to attack each other, the little <g class=\"gr_ gr_43 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"43\" data-gr-id=\"43\">man  returned<\/g>, waving two ten-franc notes. <\/p><p> &#8220;Stop!&#8221; he cried.\u00a0 &#8220;See &#8211; here is change &#8211; !&#8221; <\/p><cite> Madeleine &amp; Schauffler, Robert (1943) Brahms The Master.
