Rachmaninoff recalled the rehearsal:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suddenly, Mahler, who had conducted this passage <em>a tempo, <\/em>tapped his desk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStop!&nbsp; Don\u2019t pay any attention to the difficult bowing marked in your parts. \u2026 Play the passage like this,\u201d and he indicated a different method of bowing.&nbsp; After he made the first violins play the passage over alone three times, &nbsp;the man sitting next to the leader put down his violin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t play the passage with this kind of bowing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahler (quite unruffled): \u201cWhat kind of bowing would you like to use?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs it is marked in the score.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahler turned towards the leader with an interrogative look, and when he found the latter was of the same opinion, he tapped the desk again:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlease play it as written.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<cite>O.
